Charak's Spectrum of Activities :
Charak manufactures and markets two main categories of Ayurvedic medicines - the traditional pharmacopeial preparations (roughly the equivalent of generics in the western sense), and branded Patent & Proprietary' products (P&P) which are analogous To the branded formulations of modern medicine.

At Charak, the manufacture of all pharmacopeial preparations is based on AFI, the Shastriya Paddhati is strictly followed. Shastriya Paddhati, literally 'the technique of the scriptures' is the equivalent of modern GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices). The GMP, too, are adhered to in all manufacturing operations over and above the Ayurvedic manufacturing practices wherever relevant. Some of the practices and equipments may be unique to Ayurveda, for example the Bhatti, a sort of traditional kiln-cum-oven using cowdung as its fuel.

It is in the manufacture of Charak's Patent & Proprietary Medicines, however, that there is a harmonious blend of the GMP and the Shastriya Paddhati.

Thus, an Ayurvedic brand like Livomyn Tablets may use modern tablet film- coating technology following the GMP standards, but several of the ingredients present in Livomyn may have been earlier prepared according to the Shastriya method.

The traditional pharmacopeia I preparations manufactured by Charak number around 80 and include the Ayurvedic dosage forms of Asava, Arishta, Ark, Avaleha, Bhasma, Churna, Gutika, Guggul, Kadha, Pishti, Parpati, Ras, Taila and Vati. A special Product List features all these preparations under various subgroups.

Charak has an extensive range of branded compound formulations out of which 42 brands are actively marketed in India and a few more in other countries. The table on the following pages lists the main therapeutic and clinical properties of each of the P&P brands.

The formulae i.e. composition of all Patent & Proprietary products have been carefully arrived at in consultation with the leading Ayurvedic scholar-physicians (Ayurvedacharyas & Vaidyas). These Ayurvedic experts include such luminaries as Vaidya Bhagwan Dash. Ph.D. formerly Adviser on Ayurveda to the Government of India.

The process of a proprietary product's selection starts with identifying first the therapeutic or clinical segment where an Ayurvedic medicine can offer a distinct advantage over the western modality of treatment e.g. disorders of the liver, A comprehensive Ayurvedic overview of the clinical syndrome is then arrived at, which leads to the selection of appropriate ingredients to be incorporated in the final product.

Once a P&P formulation has been developed and a pilot batch is ready, a pre- marketing clinical protocol is prepared. This usually means testing the product on suitable patients at the Charak's clinic at Bombay. After ascertaining the clinical efficacy of the product, often-employing modern diagnostic criteria such as serological tests, the product is modified if necessary, or is directly included in the corporate marketing plan.

We dedicate this prayer for the well-being of all people in this world and especially to ailing patients taking our medicines:-
