1947 - A year to remember :
Ayurveda :
Holistic, Healthy Life :
Ayurveda is a holistic healing science, which comprises two words, Ayu and Veda. Ayu means life and Veda means knowledge or science. So the literal meaning of the word Ayurveda is the science of life.

Ayurveda is a science dealing not only with treatment of diseases but is a complete way of a healthy life. It is only in recent times that modern medicine has accepted the need for holistic healing. Even the 'WHO' (World Health Organisation) has given 'Ayurveda' recognition and the entire world has started looking at 'Ayurveda' as the only option for several disorders, for which allopathic systems of medicine can offer only symptomatic treatment.
An Ancient Wisdom :
Although extracts, such as essential oils, have been prepared from various plants for centuries, traditional herbalist has always combined herbs to modify effects, viewing the whole as greater than the parts. The move to identify the individual active ingredients and use these as single drugs began in the 18th century, and many thousands are now known.
Drugs From Plants
One of the first modern drugs to be isolated from a plant was morphine, first identified in 1803 by Friedrich Senurner in Germany. He extracted white crystals from crude opium poppy. Similar techniques soon produced aconite from monkshood, emetine from ipecacuanha, atropine from deadly nightshade, and quinine from Peruvian bark.

All of these compounds, categorized as alkaloids, are extremely potent and could only be obtained from the raw plants until scientists were able to synthesize them.
Standing the test of time
The methods of diagnosis and treatment which were used thousands of years ago are being successfully used even today. For example, Ginger or Turmeric has the same therapeutic effect on the human body that was mentioned in the Ayurvedic texts thousands of years ago.

Younger drugs in modern science, such as antibiotics might have different actions today. Some of them are not good for human use at all and have been completely banned.

Ayurvedic medicine emphasizes a "holistic" approach, treating the whole person with appropriate remedies for the mind, body, and spirit. This can include meditation, physical exercises, or herbs that are focused at some particular aspect of being. Again, modern medicine now accepts that more than just drugs are needed to manage disease.
Live In Harmony With Nature
Ayurveda approaches the complete individual while giving instructions about maintaining health. The world is turning a full circle, with academicians and the practicing faculty alike showing a renewed interest in what nature has to offer, probing deeper utilizing the latest technology and merging it with the wisdom scripted and documented thousands of years back, the world is turning back, towards "AYURVEDA".
