Shirodhara

Shirodhara is a specialized upkarma of the Panchakarma treatment. It is one of the four ‘murdhni taila’ treatments used for nourishment of the brain. It helps to enhance the functioning of the brain by reducing stress, memory and improving quality of sleep. It is one of the most preferred treatments in psychological disorders.

Procedure

Shirodhara is carried out with the help of a special vessel which pours the medicine, drop by drop about 4-5 inches above the forehead. A band is tied on the forehead at the level of the eyebrows, so as to restrict the medicine to flow into the eyes. The eyes are covered with cotton pads soaked in rosewater. The medicine is then is poured on the forehead drop by drop and at the same time the oil is slowly massaged into the scalp.

Before therapy:

No specific precautions are required except following the instructions for the underlying disease

After therapy:

There are no specific restrictions after Shirodhara except that one must not bathe after the treatment.

Caution
