Air Pollution Can Be A Cause Of Irregular Periods In Young Girls

Air pollution is a biggest threat to the human health.

Pollution kills around 1.2 million Indians a year. This winter, the condition in North India was worst. It is believed that breathing Delhi’s air is equal to smoking 50 cigarettes per day.

The air we breathe has become extremely toxic. It damages our health. It is now known that it can affect your daughter’s menses also.

Some girls have a regular menstrual cycle, whereas, some girls suffer from menstrual irregularity, which means that their period does not occur regularly.

Problem of irregular periods and their related reproductive syndromes is becoming more prevalent since the past decade.

A new study from Boston University has found that, the quality of air is related with the menstrual cycle. Smoggy, polluted air can be a reason for irregular periods in teenage girls.

Dr. Shruthi Mahalingaiah, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Boston University School of Medicine says, “While air pollution exposures have been linked to cardiovascular and pulmonary [lung] disease, this study suggests there may be other systems, such as the reproductive endocrine system, that are affected as well”.

It was observed, girls who were exposed to polluted air were at higher chances of developing irregular menstrual cycles. It takes a long time for the menses of these girls to be regular at the high school and early adulthood.

It has been found that some particulate in the atmosphere interferes with the hormonal activities, thus leading to irregular menses.

Some of the other causes of irregular periods are:

  • Medications
  • Excessive exercise
  • Low body weight
  • Over weight (obesity)
  • Emotional stress
  • Thyroid gland problems

Earlier studies have shown relation between air pollution and infertility, metabolic syndrome and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

“The reproductive system of these girls, who are just beginning to get their periods, may be particularly sensitive to the effects of air pollution.” speculates Dr. Mary Rausch, endocrinologist at north well Health Fertility in Manhasset, N.Y.
