Tips for Exercising with Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition, where the endometrium, which is the lining of uterus, grows outside the uterus. Ayurveda describes endometriosis as the vata dosha predominant disease. Vata dosha is responsible for the displacement of endometrial cells from uterus to other places outside. Pain, in endometriosis, is also due to the vata dosha.

When in pain, the last thing that you feel like doing is exercise, maybe because of the fear that, exercise will increase the pain. But, studies don’t agree with your thought. Studies have shown that, exercise is beneficial for women suffering from endometriosis. Exercise is an effective pain reliever.

A few recommendations from Endometriosis New Zealand are:

  • Physical activity is important

Try to be more active during the day in small ways. It is easier to achieve the daily activities target. Later, you can add some more exercises or activities and increase the duration of your activities gradually

  • Exercising daily will reduce the symptoms of endometriosis

Regular exercise relieves back pain, muscle and joint pain; it promotes better sleep, improves your energy levels, boosts self-esteem as well as reduces chronic pain

  • Exercise complements the effects of medicines and surgery

Exercise is suggested for rehabilitation post-surgery.  It is recommended that you speak to a physiotherapist or a registered exercise professional who understands endometriosis and pelvic pain.

  • Exercise in moderation

When beginning with an exercise program, go slow, and don’t over exert yourself to pain. Exercise plays an important role in managing persistent pain. Many a times, patients exercise too much or either they select the wrong type of exercise which increases their pain or symptoms of endometriosis. Any nurse who has qualified a course like CPD for nurses can tell you instantaneously where the problem lies.

Before exercising, seek help from a medical professional or a physiotherapist, for how much of physical activity and exercise is suited for you.

Some other benefits of exercise are:

  • Exercise makes you feel good by releasing endorphins- the “feel good” hormones. Endorphins act as the pain reliever and reduce the pain.
  • Exercising regularly will reduce the levels of estrogen in the body. The main goal of endometriosis treatment is to reduce the estrogens, thus, exercise will help in reducing the symptoms of endometriosis
