Low Sperm Count And Male Infertility

Today we shall look at the issue of low sperm count and fertility problems in males. You rather surprised to know that contrary to popular assumptions, in many couples without children, the basic problem is infertility in the male partner and not the female.

Many infertile couples stop short of investigating or looking into the male angle and tend to put the entire blame on the female partner, which is not only unfair but also unscientific.

Male infertility is largely due to problems in sperm production. The sperm or spermatozoa as they are known in scientific terminology carry the male genetic element. There are millions of spermatozoa in the semen released at intercourse but only one of them will go on to unite with the female genetic element of the ovum (egg) in the female genital tract. The resulting embryo will eventually become the new born baby.

Semen is the liquid that is ejaculated during intercourse. It carries not only the sperm but also the chemical factors and environment that will make sure that the sperm will stay healthy till it reaches the ovum to fertilize it. Unless the sperm as well as the liquid are in perfect condition, the male cannot be fertile.

A low sperm count is also called oligospermia. A complete absence of sperm called azoospermia. Your sperm count is considered lower than normal if you have fewer than 15 million sperm per milliliter of semen.

Having a low sperm count decreases the chances that one of your sperm will fertilize your partner’s egg, resulting in pregnancy. Nonetheless, many men who have a low sperm count are still able to father a child.

The quality of semen and sperm including sperm count  are decided by chemical signals called hormones. These were released by the master gland of the body called pituitary situated at the base of the brain. These hormones will act on the testes to ensure the correct formation of sperm as well as male sexual behavior like erection during intercourse and so on.

Now you can understand how a single mistake in the whole chain of events can reduce male fertility. The sperm count can become very low; the sperm can have defects which will make them useless as they cannot swim to reach the ovum. Besides, the deficiency in hormones may interfere with erection of the penis so that the sperm is not ejaculated inside the vagina and so on.

To improve your sperm count and quality follow below mentioned simple lifestyle changes:

  • Avoid spicy and junk food
  • Don’t smoke.
  • Limit or abstain from alcohol.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Avoid excessive heat exposure
  • Take proper sleep
  • Manage stress.
  • Talk to your doctor about medications that can affect sperm count.
  • Avoid exposure to pesticides, heavy metals and other toxins.
