Why Urinary Tract Infections(UTI) is More Common in the Summer?

Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infections (UTI):

  • A burning sensation during passes of urine
  • A frequent or intense urge to urinate, even though little comes out when you do pass urine
  • Fever with chills
  • Pain in lower abdomen or in pelvic area
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Cloudy, dark, bloody, or strange-smelling urine

Why are UTIs more common in the summer?

The exact cause for rise in prevalence of UTI in the summer has been inconclusive. Women are four times more likely than men to get a UTI and the summer brings an increased risk to everyone for getting one. However, following are some risk factors for the seasonality of UTI, especially in younger women.

Dehydration:

Dehydration is much more common in the summer. Due to dehydration, bacteria are not fully released from the body, increasing the chance of a UTI. So it is advisable to drink sufficient amount of water that allows our body to flush out the harmful bacteria that tends to cause UTIs.

Sexual Activity:

Sexual activity is another risk factor for UTI, may also increase in the summer among people in younger age groups.

Moisture:

The swimming, whether in a pool, lake, or beach during summer is very more common now a days. However, sitting in moist bathing suits and unhygienic condition provides a suitable breeding environment for the bacteria that causes UTIs, increasing the risk. This is due to urine in the water, people not showering before swimming and low levels of chlorine.

Increased antibiotic resistance:

Over the past decade, the incidence of hospitalizations for UTIs has increased, perhaps due to increasing resistance to antimicrobials used to treat out-patient UTIs and also due to the resulting need to admit patients to the hospital for treatment with intravenous antimicrobials.

Diabetes:

People with diabetes may have changes in their body’s defense system, making it easier to get urinary infections.

Kidney stone and enlarged prostate gland:

People with blockages in their urinary tract, such as a kidney stone, are more likely to get UTIs. An enlarged prostate gland in a man can also block the flow of urine and cause a UTI.

Prolonged catheterization:

People who have a catheter (tube) placed in their bladder for a long time are more prone to UTIs. This is because bacteria on the catheter can infect the bladder.
